The Value of Exploration and "Small Bets"

I really like this quote from James Clear, author of the book Atomic Habits:

“When nothing is working, explore and make a lot of small bets.

After something starts working, double down on what works best.

When that stops working, explore and make a lot of small bets again.”

Three takeaways for me from this quote:

  1. It make sense to defy perfectionism, and recognize that it is okay to take action and try different alternatives instead of trying to find the optional solution strait away.
  2. It is very often more effective to make small changes incrementally than it is to make a major and potentially risky change all at once.
  3. There is constant value in the process, rather than the outcome, because what might work now may not always work in the future. Circumstances and conditions change and more or less always in flux.
